Witness one angle of Stuyvesant Town’s history through the photos of Phyllis Schwebel Perez, a children’s book author who has considered herself a product of Stuyvesant Town. Her mother and father, Ethel and Martin Schwebel, first moved to Stuyvesant Town in 1947 and lived at the address until 1968. (The color photos are of Perez’s children, Jonhathan and Daniel Perez.)
The family moved to the neighborhood when Mr. Schwebel returned to civilian life after serving in the military during World War II. The couple had two children by the name of George and Phyllis, who went to school in PS61, PS40 and JHS104. Currently, her mother resides in New Jersey and her father has passed away. Perez has two children of her own and is living in Atlanta but will be returning to her former home in Stuyvesant Town to promote her new children’s book called From Raggs to Riches.
Phyllis Schwebel Perez will be doing a book reading and signing on June 23 from 7-9 p.m. The event will take place at 287 Avenue C, Apt 5D.
