Man charged with robbery in Stuy Town

A 42-year-old man was arrested after allegedly mugging two Stuyvesant Town residents in front of 521 East 14th Street.

The two women, 25 and 26, were walking home when an unknown man approached them from behind and tried to engage them in conversation. “Don’t worry. You guys are safe,” Jose Rivera supposedly told them, before snatching their pocketbooks and running down the street. One of the women then started screaming and chasing Rivera, and a good Samaritan who was nearby raced after him and tackled him near the Avenue A flagpole.

At that point, ST/PCV security had responded and held Rivera for police who made an arrest and charged him with robbery. The incident occurred on September 3 at around 1:50 a.m.

The good Samaritan was identified as a 41-year-old man from Pennsylvania.
