First Avenue bar and grill Quigley’s will be closing after seven years in business, owner Jim Frey of Stuyvesant Town said this week.
“We had a very good run,” said Frey, who said a rent hike was the biggest reason for his and his partner’s decision, although a decline in business since the recession began was also a factor.
Though the place has seen steady business over the years, “things aren’t all that great,” he admitted. As for the rent increase, Frey wouldn’t get into numbers, but said, “It was too rich for my blood.”
News of the planned closure was first noted last week on the new-ish neighborhood blog, pcvstbee.com.
“Got sad buzz with our burgers and beer last night at Quigley’s,” noted its publisher.
Frey said he wasn’t sure yet if he’d open a new place.
“Little neighborhood places like mine are becoming an endangered species,” he said.
