An attempt to steal a Peter Cooper Village resident’s cell phone on Wednesday evening was cut short thanks to the quick actions of two porters on the property who ran after the suspect and caught him. The man was then held for Stuyvesant Town’s Public Safety department and later the police.
According to the District Attorney’s office, 19-year-old Joseph Small approached the victim in front of 370 First Avenue around 5:30 p.m. and demanded her iPhone before grabbing it from her hands and running away.
Small was charged with grand larceny and theft and was arrested in front of 375 First Avenue around 6:21 p.m.
The porters who nabbed the suspect are Joel Quezada and Jose Paredes. The Public Safety officer who was also involved is Kerron Safe. The DA’s office said that Safe recovered the victim’s phone from Small’s pocket.
MAN BUSTED FOR KNIFE-POINT ROBBERY IN UNION SQUARE
Police arrested 31-year-old Kevin Ullah for robbery in front of 28 Union Square East last Wednesday at 10:31 a.m. The victim said that she was sitting on a bench in Union Square Park when Ullah sat down on the same one. Ullah then allegedly stood up, pulled out a knife and demanded her phone and wallet. After she handed them over, she said that Ullah walked away and she followed him. A witness who saw the incident followed Ullah with the victim while on the phone with the police. Police said that Ullah was walking in the direction of Barnes and Noble and was arrested at the northwest corner of East 17th Street and Union Square West. Ullah was also charged with menacing and weapons possession.
MAN ARRESTED FOR RANSOMING CELL PHONE
Thirty-year-old Christopher Horn was arrested for grand larceny by extortion at the corner of Fifth Avenue and West 23rd Street last Monday at 8:27 p.m. The victim told police that her father received a text message that said, “Found your daughter’s cell phone if you want it back.” They agreed to meet at the Bank of America at West 23rd Street and Fifth to make the exchange. Police said that Horn met the victim’s father there but when officers who accompanied him moved in to speak with Horn, he allegedly decided to run. Police said that Horn struggled with the officers and pepper spray was used to subdue him. Horn allegedly flailed his arms and did not allow officers to handcuff him. He was also charged with resisting arrest.
MAN NABBED FOR PHONE THEFT AT MOUNT SINAI BETH ISRAEL
Police arrested 44-year-old Luis Alviero for petit larceny last Monday at 8 a.m. inside the 13th precinct. Police said that Alviero went into a patient’s room at Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital at 281 First Avenue and took his cell phone.

Police arrested a teenager for thefts in two different parks this week.
The teen was busted after a theft in Evelyn’s Playground at Union Square East and East 16th Street at 10:16 a.m. last Thursday. Police said that officers were patrolling this area because there was recently a pattern of thefts in neighborhood playgrounds.
The teen approached three separate strollers with purses attached in the Union Square playground and attempted to swipe the bags. When he was questioned by police, they said the teen admitted, “I took money.”
