WOMAN CHARGED WITH STEALING THOUSANDS FROM SENIOR
Police arrested 39-year-old Dian Barrett last Tuesday for allegedly bilking an elderly woman she works for. Police said that Barrett, who is a home health aide, fraudulently conducted multiple ATM withdrawals from a 100-year-old victim. According to the district attorney’s office, Barrett made a series of withdrawals from an ATM at the bank totaling $56,900 from the period of May 31 to September 13. Police said that Barrett could be seen on video surveillance stills in the same time frame that withdrawals were made from the victim’s account and Barrett reportedly did not have permission or authority to make the withdrawals.
Police did not have information about where the senior is a resident although Barrett was arrested inside the Chase Bank at 333 East 23rd Street last Tuesday.
MAN WITH ‘FREE HUGS’ SIGN BUSTED FOR ASSAULT AT UNION SQUARE
Police arrested 26-year-old Jermaine Himmelstein for alleged assault at the corner of Union Square West and East 14th Street last Saturday at 4:20 p.m. The victim told police that she was in Union Square Park taking photos with her family and friends when Himmelstein approached them with a “free hugs” sign. He allegedly tried to hug the victim, who said that she didn’t want to be touched and tried to move away. Police said that Himmelstein attempted to reach out and hug her again, and she said she asked him nicely to leave her alone. Police said that Himmelstein then approached her from behind a short time later when she and her family were taking a photo in front of the George Washington statue. He allegedly smacked her in the face, causing her sunglasses to fall off and her cell phone to drop. Police said that the victim suffered from bruising on the right side of her face and swelling to her lip.
