Tree-cycling action in Stuyvesant Town

MulchFest in Stuy Town

MulchFest, the Parks Department’s annual event aimed at getting New Yorkers to “tree-cycle,” took place on Saturday and Sunday at various locations in the city.

As usual, there was a chipper stationed on Stuyvesant Town’s 20th Street Loop Road, where discarded Christmas trees got mulched one by one. The mulch made from the trees gets used in future city plantings, or if participants, like, they can take some home to use to make potpourri. Mulch helps spur tree growth by keeping roots warm and moist. The wood chips also add nutrients to the soil and helps prevent weeds.

Pants-less pranksters brave extreme cold this year

Participants on the N train

By Sabina Mollot

On Sunday, despite frigid temperature, straphangers with an exhibitionist streak ditched their pants and all other leg coverings to take part in the annual No Pants Subway Ride.

Always held on a winter day, the flashmob prank, held for the 16th time, is organized by the group Improv Everywhere. The route technically began at Foley Square and ended at Union Square, but participants of all ages could be seen at other subway stops as well. With the wind chill, the temperature was in the single digits.

Originally begun with just seven cold-tolerant men, the underground leg show now draws thousands and also takes place in other cities and countries. Participants, who dress appropriately for the winter other than their bare legs, always act as if they simply forgot their pants and don’t have any clue why so many others have forgotten them, too.

Robber hitting drugstores in Manhattan

Robbery suspect

Cops are on the lookout for a man who’s been robbing drugstores in Union Square and in Greenwich Village as well as a Dunkin Donuts in The Bronx. The suspect, in each incident, has made employees believe he had a gun before demanding cash.

Police say the string of holdups started on the morning of Monday, December 18 when the man strolled into a CVS at 65 Fifth Avenue between 13th and 14th Street. He then threatened employees while simulating a gun inside his coat. The suspect helped himself to $150 from the register before running out.

On the evening of Tuesday, December 26, the man walked into a Walgreens at 145 Fourth Avenue near East 14th Street. He simulated a gun under his coat while threatening employees, this time getting away with $500 in cash.

Later that same evening, he did the same thing at a Dunkin Donuts at 513 East 138th Street. He swiped $1,700 from the register before fleeing the store into a subway station.
