Man charged with bag snatching and violent mugging on First Ave.

Stuyvesant Town Dunkin Donuts

By Maria Rocha-Buschel

Police have arrested a man they say punched and robbed a man on First Avenue and also snatched a woman’s bag at the Stuyvesant Town Dunkin Donuts.

Raymond Velez, 23, allegedly walked up to a table at Dunkin Donuts at 266 First Avenue last Wednesday at 9 p.m. where the victim was sitting and grabbed her purse, which contained three credit cards.

Ten minutes later, police said he was walking near 253 First Avenue when he allegedly grabbed the second victim who had cash in his hand. Police said that Velez attempted to throw the victim to the ground and in the scuffle, Velez allegedly punched the victim in the mouth and he sustained a bruise on his lip and a cut on his hand.

The second victim was a food vendor who had a truck parked near East 14th Street and First Avenue at the time of the incident.

Velez was charged with grand larceny and attempted robbery. He was identified at the scene by the second victim and police said that he could also be seen on surveillance video entering and exiting the Dunkin Donuts. Police said that there were two additional people who entered the Dunkin Donuts with Velez but no other arrests have been made.

Police Officer Joseph Carlucci said at the public safety and environment committee meeting for Community Board 6 on Monday that anti-crime officers happened to be near the intersection and so were able to make the arrest at 9:40 p.m.

Velez was allegedly in possession of the stolen purse when he was arrested.

Velez’s attorney did not respond to a request for comment.

  1. Apparently it’s open season on the tenants of this property in terms of criminality. People need to start protecting themselves in ways that we haven’t had to deal with in decades. Probably wouldn’t hurt to have a lawyer on speed dial either, as the pockets run deep here.

Meanwhile public safety is prancing around the oval while these crimes are taking place everywhere else on the property. It’s all for show with Rick, yet people continue to praise him because he responds to emails. Wake up.

  6. This is nonsense. This is the fault of the 13th precinct. Our tax dollars are paying these lazy b—–ds, it is their responsibility, not PCVST, those are security “guards,” they undergo a 6 week training class, and are totally unequipped to deal with any sort of violent crime or felony. This is the fault of the police and no one else.
Get the 13th precinct out from behind their desks and on their feet. I never see them around this property, just parked outside their own building. The rents are sky high–6,000 for a 2 bedroom here!!!–and yet somehow as rent goes up, crime goes UP. and continues to go up, and up.
    NOT. ACCEPTABLE.

  7. More crime. A woman was assaulted by 622 East 20th a few days ago, according to the Citizen app. What the hell is going on here Rick?? Enough with your cheesy PR campaigns and nonsensical ideas, we need a working security force.
