Police Watch: Senior arrested for ‘extortion,’ Man busted for Ainsworth burglary

SENIOR CHARGED WITH HOLDING PHONE FOR RANSOM NEAR STUY TOWN
Police arrested 71-year-old El Shaday Yova for alleged grand larceny by extortion at the corner of Avenue C and East 20th Street on Tuesday, August 14 at 5:53 p.m. The victim told police that he left his phone in a taxi and when he called his number, Yova allegedly answered and said that he wanted a reward for finding the phone. Police said that Yova agreed to meet the victim in front of 321 Avenue C to claim a reward, and prior to getting arrested, the victim said that Yova refused to give him his cell phone back until he had the money. Yova was also charged with possession of stolen property.

SUSPECT ARRESTED FOR AINSWORTH BURGLARY
Police arrested a second suspect in connection with an alleged burglary at the Ainsworth at 111 East 18th Street that took place in July. Police arrested 26-year-old Hnsel Devron for the burglary on Monday, August 13 at 3:30 p.m. inside the 13th Precinct.

Police said that Devron and one other person who wasn’t arrested pried open a side door at the bar and entered the building without permission on July 12 around 9 p.m. They reportedly walked out of the bar with two bags containing property. Police did not have further information about what property was taken. The bar was reportedly closed to the public but still contained several liquor bottles. Police also said that technicians were able to lift fingerprints from the door and matched them to Devron.

Town & Village previously reported that 34-year-old Hector Rosario was arrested for the burglary at the time of the incident. Rosario was allegedly acting as the lookout while Devron and a third suspect reportedly broke into the bar. Police caught Rosario three blocks away at the corner of Union Square East and East 15th Street and charged him with possession of stolen property.

REPEAT SHOPLIFTING SUSPECT RETURNS TO FLATIRON SEPHORA
Police arrested 38-year-old Jose Perez for multiple alleged burglaries from the Sephora at 119 Fifth Avenue earlier this month.
Police said that the most recent incident happened in the store on August 7 at 2:14 p.m. when Perez allegedly entered the location and stole a fragrance. Perez also allegedly stole two fragrances from the store on August 3 at 1:10 p.m. He was charged with burglary because he had been issued a no trespassing affidavit on June 13, 2017 that prohibited him from entering any Sephora store because of previous shoplifting incidents.

Police said that Perez also removed razors from the Duane Reade at 125 Third Avenue on July 21 at 4:35 p.m. and concealed the items in his backpack before he left without paying.

Perez was also charged petit larceny in connection with the incident at Duane Reade and was arrested inside the 13th precinct on Tuesday, August 14 at 9:30 a.m.

MAN ACCUSED OF ASSAULTING WOMAN AT BROADWAY AND WEST 28TH
Police arrested 36-year-old Ken Benjamin for an alleged assault at the corner of Broadway and West 28th Street on Wednesday, August 15 at 6:22 p.m. The victim told police that she was leaving her building nearby when another woman ran by her, scared. The victim said that she then saw Benjamin running behind a man, then allegedly grabbed the man and hit him in the chest. The victim said that Benjamin looked at her and said, “B–ch, what you looking at?” He then allegedly punched her in the face and grabbed her bag.

‘DRUNK’ DRIVER ARRESTED IN UNION SQUARE
Police arrested 28-year-old Alain Dalice for alleged drunk driving at the corner of Union Square East and East 14th Street on August 18 at 5:25 a.m. Police said that Dalice was driving east on East 14th Street with all headlights and taillights off, allegedly swerving in and out of lanes unsafely with no means of signaling. When he was stopped, police said that he had a very strong odor of alcohol on his breath, bloodshot watery eyes, slurred speech and unsteady balance. Police said that Dalice also had a 750ml bottle of Hennessy liquor in the driver’s side quarter panel door.

TEEN BUSTED IN FLATIRON FOR STOLEN CITI BIKE
Police arrested a teenager for possession of stolen property at the corner of Fifth Avenue and East 19th Street on August 18 at 5:06 p.m. Police said that the suspect was seen riding a Citi Bike on the sidewalk and got into an argument with a person who said that the suspect and his friends had kicked his vehicle. Police said that the teen hadn’t rented the Citi Bike and didn’t have permission to be in possession of the bike. When he was searched, police found that he was also in possession of marijuana. The teen was also charged with an unclassified violation and possession of marijuana.

MAN ACCUSED OF SKIPPING CAB FARE, PUSHING COP
Police arrested 24-year-old Niveen Patel for alleged theft of services in front of 160 West 25th Street on August 19 at 2:49 a.m. A taxi driver flagged down an officer because he said that Patel failed to pay the $10.30 fare. Police attempted to get Patel to pay the fare but he allegedly refused and pushed the officer. The driver said that he picked Patel up at the corner of West 49th Street and Ninth Avenue and dropped him off at West 25th Street and Sixth Avenue. When he dropped Patel off, he said that Patel stepped out of the cab and refused payment, then walked away.
