Man arrested for stealing more than $11k during bank robberies

Police have arrested 48-year-old Joseph Rivera last Thursday for bank robberies in Gramercy and throughout Manhattan, allegedly taking a total of approximately $11,000 in 12 different bank robberies.

In each incident, Rivera reportedly entered a bank and passed a demand note while demanding cash from the teller.

One of the robberies that took place in Flatiron occurred on Tuesday, September 10 around noon when police said that Rivera entered the Chase Bank at 71 West 23rd Street and allegedly passed a demand note while making a demand for cash. The teller reportedly complied, and Rivera allegedly for away with $3,700.

Police said that Rivera passed a note to a teller inside the Amalgamated Bank at 301 Third Avenue near East 23rd Street on Thursday, September 19 at 1 p.m. and got away with $89. He also allegedly robbed the HSBC Bank at 800 Sixth Avenue and West 28th Street, passing a note to a teller to demand cash, but police said that he fled before the teller complied.

He also fled an HSBC Bank at 769 Broadway near East 9th Street with no money after allegedly attempted to rob it on Thursday, September 19 at 12:05 p.m. Police said that he approached a teller and passed a note demanding money, but when the teller asked for his ID, Rivera reportedly fled without any cash.

In the first reported incident, police said that Rivera entered a Chase Bank at 305 Bowery in the Lower East Side on Friday, September 6 at 11:40 a.m. and passed a demand note to a teller while also making a verbal demand for cash. The teller complied, and Rivera reportedly got away with $1,000 in cash before fleeing the bank in an unknown direction.

Rivera allegedly also robbed three banks on the Upper East Side on September 27 and September 30, getting away with at least $2,000 from two of the banks after demanding cash from the tellers but fleeing before the teller complied at the third. He reportedly robbed another bank on the Upper East Side on October 1, getting away with $1,215 in that incident.

In one robbery from the Citibank at 1900 Broadway and West 63rd Street on Friday, September 20 around noon, Rivera allegedly got away with approximately $3,000 after demanding money from a teller in a note, but he fled before a teller complied when he attempted to rob an HSBC at 2025 Broadway and West 70th Street on Monday, September 30 at 11:10 a.m.

Police said that Rivera also got away with $250 from the HSBC Bank at 666 Fifth Avenue in Midtown after he passed a note demanding money on Thursday, September 26 around 12:30 p.m.

Police said that he was seen wearing two different outfits while committing the alleged robberies: a black or white Jordan baseball cap with a black and white windbreaker with “Nike Air” written on the back, or a grey and black hooded fleece sweatshirt with “Hilfiger” written on the sleeve.

Rivera has also allegedly been known to frequent HSBC, Bank of America, Chase, Capital One, Citibank, Amalgamated Bank and TD Bank in the West Village, East Village, Gramercy, Kips Bay, Midtown, the Upper East Side and the Upper West Side.
